Patti, do you think you write, then, to sort of reinstate the beauty that you feel is lost? Is the writing restorative (not just of you but of some sort of abstract beauty-in-the-world)?
Yes I think so Henriette. I think I feel sad sometimes knowing that people feel so overwhelmed by the ugliness of things and I want them to know all is not lost.
Because I know life is beautiful, even when it’s ugly and cold and awful, and all the goodness and love I counted on seem to have disappeared.

Oh and Arcadia is one of my favourite plays ever. I saw it in The West End ages ago and remember it so well. Am going to look for it now!
It really was. It’s still so vivid in my (aphantasic) mind. I wish I’d seen it twice too!
I saw it in its opening run, at the National Theatre. Twice! It was amazing, wasn't it?!
